I downloaded the free version for my Fujifilm camera. I have color graded two images so far. I hope there is a capture one for dummies. I am struggling to “get it” Taking a free one hour.
In this blog post, I’ll guide you through the basics of Capture One Express and also talk about the differences between the Express and Pro versions.
First, let’s start with why anyone would want to use a photo editor at all:
If you’ve got a Sony or Fujifilm camera, you’ve probably spent hours trying to nail that perfect, memorable shot from your holiday, birthday party – or anything else that you love to photograph. When you upload the photos to your computer and export them for printing or sharing online, you might be disappointed to find the moment doesn’t look as good as you remember it.
That’s because shooting with a camera is only half the battle – you need image editing software to make quick fixes to elements like brightness, shadows, colors or lighting and create a truly memorable photo.
It doesn’t have to be complicated – the auto adjustments and essential editing tools in Capture One Express can help you boost your photos in just a few clicks. Here’s a quick guide to using them: How to set up anydesk.
Automatically boost photos

Want a fast way to improve your photos? You can automatically boost image elements like colors, white balance, contrast or brightness using Auto Adjustments in Capture One Express.
There are two ways to apply an Auto Adjustment:

1. Click the adjustments menu and select Auto Adjust.
2. Use the shortcut CMD + L on Mac or CTRL + L on Windows.
2. Use the shortcut CMD + L on Mac or CTRL + L on Windows.
Then, select which image elements you wish to automatically adjust by selecting
Adjustments > Configure Auto Adjustments.
Adjustments > Configure Auto Adjustments.
The other option it to click the A symbol in the right corner of almost every Tool. Capture One Express will then apply the tool in a way that fits your image as best as possible.
To undo an adjustment, select the single arrow or use the CMD + Z shortcut on Mac or CTRL + Z on Windows.
The red circle around A marks the Auto Adjustment setting in the specific tool – for example in the High Dynamic Range sliders shown here.
Instant color grading with Styles
Instantly transform the look of your photos with Styles – a layer of preset colors and adjustments that can be applied over any photo with just one click.
Capture One Express comes with some built-in Styles – scroll through and try them out on your photo to see which look you prefer. You will find them in the Styles and Presets Tool tab.
Scroll through the different Styles and find one that fits your photo best. You can also find some built-in presets, which is an easy way to adjust specific elements of the photo.
Although you can apply Styles to JPEG files, you will get the best result with a RAW file – simply change your camera settings to shoot in RAW instead of JPEG. To learn more about the benefits of RAW files, read our Why shoot RAW blogpost.

Express vs. Pro
Capture One Express is a simplified version of Capture One Pro – with the same fast performance and high-quality image conversion as in the award-winning Pro version.
So what’s the difference between Express and Pro? With a full range of professional photo editing tools, the Pro version gives you complete creative control of your photo editing. For example, you can use Layers to adjust specific sections of an image without affecting the rest, apply advanced color grading, shoot directly into your computer with tethered capture, and customize your own workspace so you can quickly find the tools you need and edit big projects in a snap.

I wrote a blog post earlier this year about why I switched to Capture One for image editing, after over a decade of using Lightroom. Here’s the summary:
- I liked Lightroom’s workflow but the software started to get messy throughout the years as they added features without optimizing it
- Lightroom lacked in color controls; Capture One excels in color, and color is extremely important
- Fujifilm RAW files couldn’t be adequately demosaiced in Lightroom; Capture One handled them better (that worm thing?)
- I could do in Capture One what I needed extra plugins and software programs for working with Lightroom
- I would miss Lightroom’s excellent cataloging features
A couple of weeks ago, Phase One (makers of Capture One) announced a collaboration with Fujifilm.
Phase One is known for their medium-format digital backs for professional cameras. Capture One was developed to handle these detailed, beautifully-rendered large files.
Office yammer. Per their press release, “We are proud to be working to share with Fujifilm shooters the opportunity to benefit from Capture One’s highly responsive processing engine, unmatched color handling, precision-editing tools, and seamless tethered support.”
Capture One Fujifilm
Fujifilm has kinda skipped the full frame camera market and focused on APS-C and medium format sensors. This is why it’s so exciting that Phase One is collaborating with them. It will unleash the full potential of Fujifilm’s awesome sensors coming out in their more affordable medium format cameras, as well as their amazing APS-C sensors.
Capture One is offering two versions of their software specific to Fujifilm cameras. I’ve summarized them below, but for a full comparison between Capture One Express and Capture One Pro, check out their chart here.
Capture One Express Fujifilm
A “lite” version of Capture One Fujifilm will be available with all Fujifilm cameras (yes, free!). This can be likened to your basic RAW file editor, allowing you to change basic color, contrast, and toning, as well as cataloging. Fujifilm previously had their own RAW editor included with their cameras; Capture One will be a powerful addition.
This version, Capture One Express Fujifilm, will provide RAW support for all Fujifilm cameras. It also includes what you would call a “style pack” – Fujifilm’s 16 in-camera film simulations (Velvia, Provia, Classic Chrome, etc) can be applied to your RAW files in Capture One (future release).
I think I mentioned this already, it’s free.
Capture One Pro Fujifilm
For photographers who only shoot Fujifilm, you have the option to purchase a “complete” version of Capture One Pro, but only with Fujifilm support.
Aside from full editing capabilities, this version will also give you tethering capability. Zoom, pan, compose, and capture through the software or mobile device. “Live view” tethering will be available for the professional cameras (GFX, X-H1, X-T3, X-T2, X-T1, X-Pro2).
This version of the software doesn’t cost much less than the full version ($159 per year vs $180). So if you have RAW files in other formats, or anticipate that you might in the future, you might as well get the full version of Capture One Pro. You can also purchase a perpetual license for $299, which includes support and updates “forever”.
